Description

      The I-54 class submarines (Type B modified 2) were wartime hastily constructed submarines, with three commissioned in 1944. Of these, I-56 and I-58 were operated as vessels carrying six Kaiten suicide torpedoes each.

      I-58 sank a US Navy heavy cruiser with a torpedo attack shortly before the end of the war. It then remained in Kure until the end of the war.
