Description

The Jingei, the first ship of the Jingei-class submarine tenders, was the first full-fledged large submarine tender of the Imperial Japanese Navy, equipped not only with submarine resupply and repair facilities but also with rest and lodging facilities for crew members. Commissioned in 1923, it served as the flagship of a submarine squadron and was deployed to Truk Atoll in the South. In 1943, it served as a training ship for the Kure Submarine School, and from 1944 it engaged in transport duties, but was hit by a mine and heavily damaged during a transport mission to Okinawa. It was later sunk by an attack from American aircraft carriers.
