Description
The Jingei-class submarine tenders, the first full-fledged large submarine tenders of the Imperial Japanese Navy, were equipped not only with submarine resupply and repair facilities but also with rest and lodging facilities for crew members. The first ship, Jingei, entered service in 1923 (Taisho 12), and the second ship, Chogei, entered service the following year, 1924 (Taisho 13).
In the early stages of the war, they served as flagships of submarine squadrons and were deployed to Truk Atoll in the South. In 1943 (Showa 18), they served as training ships for the Kure Submarine School, and from 1944 (Showa 19), they were engaged in transport missions to the Okinawa area. In July 1945 (Showa 20), they were heavily damaged by an attack by US aircraft carrier planes in Maizuru and remained there until the end of the war. After the war, they were used as repatriation ships and were dismantled in 1947 (Showa 22).
