About the Actual Aircraft
The Royal Air Force's Spitfire fighter is known as one of the world's greatest fighters of World War II.
Its distinctive elliptical wing design provided excellent flight performance. The first aircraft made its debut in 1936 and entered service in 1938. Since the first mass-produced Mk.I appeared in 1939, numerous improvements have been made, including the Mk.IX, which entered service in 1942. It was powered by a two -stage, two-speed supercharged Merlin 60 series engine. Paired with a four-blade propeller, it achieved a top speed of 650 km/h. Spitfires served prominently in the Battle of Britain early in the war, and continued to serve as a key part of the Royal Air Force until the end of the war, including the Normandy landings. They continued to serve in countries around the world long after the war ended.
