About the aircraft
The F/A-18E/F Super Hornet was developed as an advanced version of the F/A-18C/D Hornet and began deployment in 1999.
Compared to the C/D models, it features a larger airframe and increased fuel tank capacity, extending its range.
It is equipped with two F414-GE400 turbofan engines. In addition to a fixed armament of one 20mm M61A1 Vulcan cannon, the enlarged aircraft is equipped with 11 additional hardpoints, capable of carrying most of the weapons used by the US, including air-to-air missiles such as the AIM-120A, air-to-surface missiles such as the AGM-65E, and bombs.
VFA-81 Sunliners, a strike fighter squadron of Carrier Air Wing One based at Naval Air Station Oceana, operates the single-seat F/A-18E.
This aircraft excels as a multirole aircraft, capable of performing a variety of missions.
