Description
About the aircraft
The F/A-18E/F Super Hornet was developed as an advanced version of the F/A-18C/D Hornet and began deployment in 1999.
Compared to the C/D models, the aircraft features a larger airframe and increased fuel tank capacity, extending its range. It is powered by two F414-GE400 turbofan engines.
In addition to a fixed armament of one 20mm M61A1 Vulcan cannon, the enlarged aircraft boasts 11 additional hardpoints, capable of carrying most of the weapons currently used by the US. This multi-role aircraft is highly versatile, capable of performing a variety of missions. Founded in 1942 as VT-11, it later became VA-12A in 1946 and VA-115 in 1948. The Eagles, which evolved into Attack Squadron VFA-115 in 1996, have been operating the F/A-18E since 2002.
Deployed at Iwakuni Air Base, Japan, the aircraft is well-known in Japan.
