Description
The EA-18G Growler is an electronic warfare aircraft developed and operated by the US Navy as a successor to the Grumman EA-6B Prowler. Developed based on the F/A-18F Super Hornet, and started operation in 2009. It carries one pilot, and one WSO (Weapon Systems Officer).
It mounts electronic warfare equipment such as the AN/ALQ-99 Tactical Jammer System (TJS) pod, the AN/ALQ-218(V)2 receiver, and the AN/ALQ-227 Communications Countermeasures set, and counters enemy air defense (SEAD; Suppression of Enemy Air Defenses) aircraft.
The US Navy Electronic Attack Squadron VAQ-137 “Rooks”, founded in 1973, has also been operating the EA-18G Growler since 2013. It features an illustration of a crow drawn on the tail.
