About the aircraft
The F-14 Tomcat served as the U.S. Navy's main air superiority fighter from 1974 to 2006.
Developed primarily for fleet defense as an aircraft carrier-based aircraft, it was capable of carrying long-range AIM-54 Phoenix missiles and short-range AIM-9 Sidewinder air-to-air missiles, as well as the M61 Vulcan cannon. It was also equipped with the AN/AWG-9 radar, which, in combination with Phoenix missiles, could simultaneously track 24 targets from a distance of approximately 160 km and attack six of them simultaneously.
The aircraft's distinctive feature was its variable-wing design, with a sweep angle adjustable between 20 and 68 degrees. It offered excellent STOL and high speed capabilities. The VF-111 Sundowners, a fighter squadron belonging to the Pacific Fleet's Carrier Air Wing CVW-15, based at Miramar Air Base and active until 1995, also operated the F-14 Tomcat from 1978 until its disbandment in 1995.
Its markings, evoking the image of the rising sun flag, were popular.
