Description

About the Actual Aircraft

The Mitsubishi A6M2 Zero was a carrier-based fighter operated by the Imperial Japanese Navy during the Pacific War.

Its outstanding maneuverability and long flight range, combined with the skilled pilots, overwhelmed and amazed the American forces in the early stages of the war.

It first flew in 1939 and entered service in 1940. It continued to be improved throughout the war and remained in service until the end of the conflict.

Over 10,000 aircraft were produced, totaling all types.

The first of many types was the A6M2. It was equipped with a Sakae 12 engine. The lack of engine power was compensated for by thorough weight reduction of the aircraft, resulting in high performance. It was equipped with two 20mm machine guns in the wings and two 7.7mm machine guns in the nose.

In the early stages of the war, its performance, which met the skills of its skilled pilots, overwhelmed the Americans. However, as the war progressed, the American military's resources, the development of new aircraft, and air combat methods put it at a disadvantage.

Due to delays in the development of its successor, it became Japan's leading fighter plane, active throughout the entire war.
